The first trailer has sparked a lot of speculation. Here’s our theory about this mysterious new character.
There’s not one but two new characters introduced in the two-minute teaser. And while the Internet seems to hope that mysterious lady is Elsa’s girlfriend, we have a different theory. Make sure to read the full article for our breakdown of why we think this character is actually Elsa’s mother.
Ever since Frozen was released, fans have been asking for Elsa to have a female love interest, the most prominent being the #MakeElsaGay movement spurred on by the coming out themes in Elsa’s story throughout the first movie.
While the hope for Elsa’s love story lives on, we don’t think that is who this new character is — though we do think she’s another woman very, very close to Elsa’s heart. Read on to hear why, and rewatch the full trailer for Frozen 2 below:
Nothing else in the trailer points to anything about a love interest. That doesn’t mean there won’t be one, but this trailer is all about Elsa testing her powers and a journey out of Arendelle, perhaps to find the origin of her powers so she can understand them better.
The girl everyone is pointing to as Elsa’s potential love interest definitely seems to be a child. Plus, there’s another character in this scene, who appears to be a fair-haired, adolescent boy. This is where we think we get a clue to who this girl actually is.
The pair of kids in this scene bear a striking resemblance to young versions of Anna and Elsa’s parents, King Agnarr and Queen Iduna. So our theory is this could be a flashback to Anna and Elsa’s parents meeting as children.
The wind power that’s clearly on display in this scene hints at other elemental powers in the world of Frozen. There’s also some strange looking fire in the trailer. So if this scene is in fact Elsa’s parents, we might be getting a hint at the origins of the elemental powers similar to the ice abilities their daughter later possesses. (Some fans are even speculating that the four diamond-shaped icicles on the teaser poster could symbolize the four seasons, with Elsa as winter and this mystery girl as fall.)
The wooded location looks similar to the landscape Anna, Elsa and the gang are in at the end of the trailer. Perhaps the journey to understand Elsa’s powers ends at the place where her parents first uncovered these powers.
There’s some real world details that back this up as well. Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the Oscar-winning songwriters of the first film who also worked on the stage musical of Frozen, said their work with co-writer and director Jennifer Lee crossed over a fair amount with the development of Frozen 2. Last March they were quoted in Variety as saying, “We know the parents a lot better.”
Maybe it’s a flashback to Anna and Elsa’s parents. Maybe the King and Queen of Arendelle aren’t dead after all. Who knows where they were going when their ship was lost at sea. Was it to this autumnal land that’s home to some elemental magic? What we know for sure is the creative team behind Frozen spent time developing these characters.
So, this trailer does not rule out a love interest for Elsa, but it doesn’t confirm it either. More than anything this trailer hints at a story of self-discovery for Frozen 2.
